This is why we have created a handy guide for you to follow before sending your car in for it’s MOT.

Simple MOT Checks

  • All your vehicle lights are working
    • Checking that all your lights on your vehicle work is important. Being seen at night can stop a potentially fatal accident from occurring when you are driving around. From checking your headlights and sidelights, to your hazards and tail lights, they are all equally as important. Checking them yourself is relatively easy. When you have parked up in work or at home, having someone stand behind whilst you apply pressure to the brakes with your headlights on can test your brake lights and tail lights. Turning on your hazards too can let them check your rear lights work. They can then move to the front of your car and check your headlights on side lights, normal and full beam. Again, turning on the hazards can let them check your front hazards work.
  • Good tyre tread and inflation
    • Keeping your tyres inflated to  the correct dpi can mean that you have full control of your car on the roads. Over inflated tyres can mean you ‘bounce’ across the road when you hit a speed bump or pothole. Under deflated tyres can mean they are more likely to get damaged and shorten their life. Having a good tyre tread too can mean you have more grip whilst travelling on the roads. Good tread improves stopping distance and control on corners. Surprisingly, this is one of the most common MOT test Bristol failures that we come across.
  • Oil and water levels
    • Your oil and other important liquids in your engine are what keep it running from day to day. Keeping these topped up to the indicated level will ensure that your car continues to run at it’s expected performance. Using a dipstick can show you the amount of oil within your vehicle. Your other engine liquids are in translucent containers beside your engine, with indicators marked on them.
  • Good brakes
    • If your brakes are squeaking or making a grinding noise when you apply pressure to your brake pedal, this could mean your brakes are worn or damaged. A simple brake disk, drum or pad replacement can solve this problem and make you safe on the roads again, ensuring that you don’t fail on this aspect in your MOT test Bristol.
