Recent MOT Changes
In 2018, to keep up with the continually developing of the vehicles that we see on our roads, the MOT test will have some changes made to it. These new changes will mostly affect diesel cars but petrol and hybrid cars won’t be completely unaffected. Here at AP Autocare, we have compiled for you the most important changes to the MOT Bristol test and what you should expect when you take your car or van in next.
Fault Classes
You will now see each fault on your vehicle graded as ‘Minor’, ‘Major’ or ‘Dangerous’. Each grade has its own repercussions:
- Minor: These will replace the ‘Advisory’ that you will have seen previously on a fault noted by an MOT tester. These aren’t dangerous but will require repair in the near future.
- Major: These faults will require immediate repair and for the vehicle to be retested to assure the car is now road legal.
- Dangerous: Even if you have one dangerous fault, this will result in the immediate failure of your car or van, and require a fair amount of work to make it pass when retested.
Diesel Vehicle Emissions
You may have noticed that the emissions emitted from your vehicle have previously been noted on your MOT slip. However, for diesel vehicles now that are fitted with a DPF (diesel particulate filter), the amount of harmful gases emitted will now be scrutinised. If your car emits a “visible smoke of any colour” from its’ exhaust, this will result in an immediate failure. The DPF on your diesel vehicle will now be checked for any historic tampering or changes to stop the risk of people attempting to cheat the test. You will be required to give a legitimate reason for the tampering of your DPF otherwise your car will be rejected from testing.
Steering Systems
Your steering system is important for you to have 100% control over your vehicle and the direction that it is heading in. The new MOT changes mean that your steering system will be checked for any leaks, as this will result in a major fault and therefore a failure.
Reversing Lights
Similarly to the rest of the lights on your car, your reversing lights must all be fully working and not have any cracks in the containing. Having reversing lights that can display fully to other motorists and pedestrians that your intention is to reverse, will save hundreds of accidents.
