Many key components needed to build a new car rely on chips, and with chipmakers struggling to keep up with demand, there are widespread shortages. This has had a major impact on the availability of new cars, with dealers reporting longer lead times for customers who order a vehicle.

The importance of Microchips

Because of a shortage of microchips, the huge majority of manufacturers now have to decrease or, in some cases, halt their production lines. Microchips are used in the circuitry of every electronic device, which includes mobile phones, PCs, game consoles, and your car.

The computer chips contain tiny components that help control various functions, such as your car’s entertainment system, assisted parking, etc. Microchips must be manufactured in dedicated factories with tidy conditions where there’s no dust or stationary electricity because they are so small and precise.

The country’s worst COVID epidemic in two years has compelled authorities to tighten the nation’s zero-Covid policy, resulting in the closure of several large cities and the evacuation of millions of people

Automakers have been forced to shut down manufacturing in places like Shanghai and Jilin Province, risking postponed consignments when the global demand for cars is high.

Volkswagen’s (VLKPF) industries in Changchun, Shanghai, and Jilin’s provincial capital have been closed for weeks, according to the company. Lockdowns in Shanghai and other Chinese cities are becoming more common, posing a growing economic threat.

“Production in our processing plants in Changchun (since mid-March) and Anting/Shanghai (since April 1) is currently on hiatus due to the current COVID situation,” Volkswagen said in a written response to CNN Business. “At the moment, this is causing a production delay.”

A Class 7 MOT is a testing procedure for large vehicles in the United Kingdom. The test covers both the safety of the vehicle and its emissions.

What is a Class 7 MOT?

A Class 7 MOT is an annual test of large goods vehicles (LGVs) over 3,500kg of maximum authorised mass. The test checks the safety and roadworthiness of the vehicle and its tyre condition.

The test is carried out by licenced testing stations and must be booked in advance. The test fee for goods vehicles (over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg design gross weight) is currently £58.60.

During the test, the qualified examiner will check the condition of the brakes, suspension, steering, bodywork, tyres, wheels, mirrors, seatbelts, and lights. They will also check that there are no dangerous defects that could cause injury or death to you or other road users.

If an automobile passes its MOT, you will be given or issued a certificate that will be valid for 12 months from the date of expiration on your current certificate. If your vehicle fails its MOT, then you will be given a list of items that need to be repaired for it to pass the next time around. You can still drive your vehicle while these repairs are being carried out, but they must be completed within 28 days of SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) of your vehicle; otherwise, you could face being prosecuted by the police.
